Historical annals tell
us of fox hunting in and around Philadelphia
from Colonial times. In 1914 a number of
horsemen living in the Huntingdon Valley section
of the city formed the Huntingdon Valley Hunt
(HVH). In the intervening years there has
been considerable evolution in the goal of the
hunt. No longer is the goal to bring harm
to the fox or to cause its demise. In
fact, the Huntingdon Valley Hunt is more
formally classified as a "chase" rather than a
hunt. HVH riders have a deep respect for
wildlife, run and support animal rescues, and
share the common bond of appreciating the
indescribable thrill that comes from riding
cross country, watching a good pack of hounds,
enjoying the companionship of other riders, and
continuing a tradition that is centuries old.

Riding with a
hunt utilizes
all the
horsemanship
skills developed
by training and
the show ring.
Many of the
skills required
by competition
have their
origins in the
hunt. For
horsemen
interested in
the traditions
and skills of
their sport,
foxhunting
provides a
challenging
alternative to
the show ring.
Huntingdon
Valley Hunt
kennels their
hounds at Fox
Heath and
Richard Harris
is their Master
and Huntsman.
The
hunting season
begins in
September and
runs through
March. Meets are
scheduled every
Wednesday and
Sunday, weather
and footing
conditions
permitting.
Please
call the Kennels at 215.598.7792, to inquire about upcoming meets.
